20 Nursing terms

February 14, 2020 Hi, my name is Jessy Tremblay.I live in Saint-Lin. I have been studying Nursing for 2 and a half years at Saint-Jérome College. The glossary that I made can be useful for nursing students, both new and old. Each word in this glossary are terms used in the medical community by the entire interdisciplinary team. Indeed, these words have been chosen especially because they are terms frequently used and important to know. By learning the definition of these words, you can learn a lot about the different terms used to define medical condition.

Abscess
noun
It is a collection of pus in limited tissue spaces, usually caused by bacterial infection.
Appendicitis
Noun
A serious medical condition in which the appendix becomes inflamed and painful.
Atherosclerosis
Noun
This is the presence of intimal plaques (atheromas) that invade the lumen of medium and large arteries.
chorioamnionitis
noun
intra-amniotic infection (IAI) is an inflammation of the fetal membranes (amnion and chorion) due to a bacterial infection.
Cirrhosis
Noun
is a condition in which the liver does not function properly due to long-term damage. This damage is characterized by the replacement of normal liver tissue by scar tissue. Typically, the disease develops slowly over months or years.
Cyanosis
Noun
A bluish discoloration of the skin resulting from poor circulation or inadequate oxygenation of the blood.
Dysuria
Noun
It is a term that indicates painful or bothersome urination, conventionally associated with a burning sensation, during a urinary tract infection for example.
Emphysema
Noun
It's a destruction of the lung parenchyma, causing loss of lung elasticity, disappearance of the alveolar walls.
Epistaxis
Noun
It is a moderate or profuse nasal hemorrhage.
Icterus
Noun
Skin turns yellow due to buildup of bilirubin in the blood.
Laryngitis
Noun
Inflammation of the larynx, typically resulting in huskiness or loss of the voice, harsh breathing, and a painful cough.
Myocardial infarction
Noun
This is a myocardial necrosis caused by the acute obstruction of the artery of the heart.
Osteomyelitis
Noun
It is a bacterial intection that causes inflammation and destruction of bones.
Pancreatitis
Noun
This is either acute or chronic inflammation of the pancreas. If it is chronic, this is irreversible and progressive, which results in impaired functions of the pancreas.
Peritonitis
Noun
It is an infection of the abdominal cavity.
Placenta previa
noun
It is a complication during childbirth where the placenta is implanted on or near the internal opening of the cervix.
Pneumothorax
noun
Air in the chest, usually by perforation of the pleura.
Polyuria
Noun
We say polyuria when we urinate a lot during the day , that is to say when we urinate more than 3L per day.
Pyelonephritis
noun
Term used to define a renal parenchyma infection.
stroke
Noun
It is a sudden neurological deficit that results from focal cerebral ischemia associated with a definitive cerebral infarction.
